A Hamas delegation left Cairo amid ongoing negotiations over a Gaza ceasefire deal. However, they also said that indirect talks with Israel may continue next week. They left Cairo on Thursday (March 7). The British media reported the news.
Hamas said in a statement that its delegation left Cairo on Thursday morning.
However, Egyptian state TV channel Al-Cahra quoted a senior Hamas official as saying talks would resume next week.
Mediators from the United States, Egypt and Qatar were hopeful that a 40-day ceasefire could come into effect next week to mark the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Israel did not send a delegation to Cairo. They want a full list of the surviving hostages from Hamas. They claim that Hamas still has more than 130 hostages. Israeli officials also said that 30 of them have already been killed.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for Hamas, Jihad Taha, said that Israel wants a ceasefire, the return of refugees and the complete withdrawal of troops from their lands, including areas devastated by Israeli operations. Besides, they will not release the hostages. But Israel has refused to deliver on that promise and guarantee that it will not attack again.
The US State Department said on Wednesday that the problems that have arisen are solvable. They are still trying hard to reach an agreement.
On October 7, Hamas fighters attacked southern Israel, killing at least 1,200 Israelis and taking 253 hostages. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health of Hamas-controlled Gaza has claimed that 30,800 Palestinians have been killed so far in the Israeli invasion of Gaza.
