His ashes were deposited in the Memorial installed in the General Cemetery of Santiago, in honor of who was president of the Communist Party of Chile and a tireless social fighter, communist militant and promoter of justice and democracy. Lautaro Carmona, current president of the PC, stated that “Our tribute, our commitment, will be there every day in every place, in every space in which a supportive and sensitive organization is occupied in the face of those affected, no matter how minimal, in every big battle, in every small battle, it will be present the figure of Guillermo, and thus this will be a tribute that will enrich the struggle of the people, that will nourish, that will share, that will socialize.” Margarita Alvarado, Teillier’s partner, indicated that “Guillermo is already on his way to the stars, like that star of ours, a party symbol forever, rescued after thirty years of disappearance, a collective work of many in which our father and companion actively participated. We feel Guillermo’s presence in the continuity of the party’s fight to represent the interests of the Chilean people. Today more than ever the words of our Pablo Neruda make sense to us: “You have made me indestructible because with you I do not end in myself.”

Hugo Guzman. Journalist. “The century”. Santiago. 4/2/2024. The site is simple. Two stones from the Huequecura River, from the town of Santa Bárbara, in the south of the country, where Guillermo Teillier del Valle was born, next to a metal plaque with the phrase stated by the former president of the Communist Party of Chile, “If we are going to die, we will die.” to die fighting”, make up the space of permanent tribute.

The Memorial dedicated to Teillier, near where the remains of the communist militant and writer, Volodia Teitelboim, are, as was his will. Not far from the Gladys Marín Memorial. The Memorial honoring a tireless social fighter, communist militant and promoter of justice and democracy. The Memorial inaugurated this Saturday, February 3, 2024 in the General Cemetery in honor of her dignity, her legacy and her tireless and permanent battles until her death in August of last year.

A man who was committed to the process led by President Salvador Allende, who suffered imprisonment and torture at the beginning of the dictatorship, who renounced going into exile to stay in the country and contribute to the reorganization of his party, which took sensitive tasks of anti-dicatorial resistance, and that was understanding the times in the construction of democracy and the search for social justice for the Chilean people.

The ashes of Guillermo Teillier were transferred to the Memorial, before the tribute of communist militants, authorities, intellectuals, young people and workers.

Lautaro Carmona, president of the PC, expressed that “our tribute, our commitment, will be every day in every place, in every space in which a supportive and sensitive organization is occupied, no matter how minimal, in the face of those affected, in every great battle. “In every small battle, the figure of Guillermo will be present, and thus this will be a tribute that will enrich the struggle of the people, that will nourish, that will share, that will socialize.”

The leader stated that “a little more than six months have passed since Guillermo left us, and he is present and will be present in each of the activities that as a collective, both from a militant point of view but also as human beings, we cultivate.” between us with an always permanent and reiterated goal: how to serve more and better the cause of the popular movement, how to hold those flags that were bequeathed to us, to never lower the determination to fight against injustice, to always keep alive the determination to fight for the democratic deepening of Chilean society, in a perspective that tomorrow will allow, by determination of the people, to build that more just, more supportive society, in the end, the beginning of the construction by the people of a socialist society for Chile.”

Raúl Zurita, National Literature Prize winner, spoke at the tribute to the former president of the PC, highlighting his political figure and dignified and consistent man. He dedicated some verses to her by the French poet Eugène-Émile-Paul Grindel, who was a clandestine member of French communism during the Second World War and author of admired texts such as the poem “Liberté.”

Margarita Alvarado, companion and widow of Guillermo Teillier, spoke on behalf of the family and expressed that “as a family we feel very moved and proud, because this Memorial, which remembers our father and companion, comes to add to these testimonies, but embodying and representing part of what were the principles and wills of Guillermo Teillier as a communist.”

Words by Margaret Alvarado, companion of William Teillier

“Good morning to all, colleagues… Thank you very much for joining us at the inauguration of this Memorial dedicated to comrade Guillermo Teillier, which comes to join the Memorials of so many in this place, such as that of the detained and missing colleagues and executed, that of Víctor Jara, of comrade Salvador Allende, of comrade Gladys Marín and here, next to us, that of comrades Orlando Letelier and Volodia Teitelboim.

Documents and testimonies of the struggle and dedication of those who persevered in their principles, their ideals and their dreams; More than paying tribute to people, they transcend to become a testimony of memory of an entire people who have fought for the transformation and change of our society to build a world of justice and good living for all, despite adversity, persecutions and repression at different times and places.

For this reason, as a family we feel very moved and proud, because this Memorial, which remembers our father and companion, comes to add to these testimonies, but embodying and representing part of what were the principles and wills of Guillermo Teillier as a communist.

Part of this legacy has reached us in the company, the word and the voices of dozens of friends and colleagues who have come to talk to us about Guillermo, about our comrade Guillermo.

Voices that tell us that they met him in the south of the country, in Pitrufquén, Valdivia or Temuco before the coup.

Voices that with admiration remember him building a party, encouraging the courage of those who fought in the most difficult underground conditions.

Voices, testimonies, that proudly treasure the memory of the tasks and battles, larger or smaller, that they undertook alongside the “boss” against tyranny.

In all these voices resounds the call not to surrender and to organize the fight for life that Guillermo did and that is written in this memorial: “If we have to die, let it be fighting.”

We know that Guillermo recognized the generous and heroic dedication of hundreds of companions, with the certainty that the emancipatory work is the task and commitment not of one person, but of the work, effort and will of the party collective, the driving force of the people’s struggle. .

Our epics are collective and are the sum of hundreds of militants. And in this sense, this Memorial materializes those principles, because it is the creation and product of collective work where each of the participants contributed a part to its realization.

That is why we thank Carlos Durán, author of the project and, very especially, but especially, the builders headed by Pablo Cordua with his extraordinary team of workers and Pamela Mansilla, designer, for their contribution in the production of their image on the plaque. A great recognition for your dedication, support and commitment.

Added to this group is the extraordinary work of Mauricio Teillier – Guillermo’s brother – and his colleague José Castro, secretary of Los Angeles, who were in charge of searching the Huequecura River for two stones. Carlos Durán’s idea was to put in the Memorial a symbol of the lands of Santa Bárbara, birthplace of comrade Guillermo. They are joined by colleague Guillermo Adriazola, who was in charge of the complicated work of transferring the stones to Santiago. Quite an epic until the objective is met. All our thanks to them too.

Thus, the creation and construction of this Memorial is nothing more than the manifestation of how our epics are collective and the work, often silent, of many friends, colleagues and collaborators.

Finally, on behalf of William’s children and myself, I would like to extend special thanks to those who made it possible for me to finally rest here, alongside Volodya Teitelboin, as was their will.

To the General Cemetery as an institution and its director Raschid Saud, and especially to the staff and officials who always had the best disposition to support all the work. To my colleague Ricardo Solé for all his management and permanent work. To the leadership of the party in its president, Lautaro Carmona, and his general secretary, Bárbara Figueroa, for the concern and affection with which they have deployed the initiatives to honor and remember the comrade.

Guillermo is already on his way to the stars, like that star of ours, a party symbol forever, rescued after thirty years of disappearance, a collective work of many in which our father and companion actively participated.

We feel Guillermo’s presence in the continuity of the party’s fight to represent the interests of the Chilean people.

Today more than ever the words of our Pablo Neruda make sense to us: “You have made me indestructible because with you I do not end in myself.”

Guillermo Teillier del Valle. Always present!”.
