The former president of the United States, Donald Trump, presented himself this Saturday as a “proud political dissident” during his speech at the annual American conservative convention CPAC. During his speech, he compared his situation to that of the late Russian politician Alexei Navalny, who recently died in prison and for whom the US government blames Vladimir Putin.
Trump, who has been indicted 91 times and faces four civil trials for crimes including bribery, attempting to overturn an election and illegally retaining classified documents, addressed the audience, which included national and international far-right leaders, published the Efe news agency.
Among the participants were figures such as the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele; the Argentine president, Javier Milei; the president of the Spanish far-right party VOX, Santiago Abascal; and the son of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, Eduardo Bolsonaro.
During his speech, the former Republican president reiterated his promises on issues such as immigration and assured that he would carry out “the largest deportation in history” and build a border wall, a promise not fulfilled during his mandate.
In addition, he attacked President Joe Biden, who will likely be his rival in the next presidential election, mocking his age and referring to himself as a victim of political persecution. “Not even Al Capone has been indicted so many times,” he said.
Trump also projected confidence in his eventual victory, declaring that the Nov. 5 election will be “the new Liberation Day” for the United States and promising “final and absolute revenge” against those he considers his political opponents.
Although the American magnate is seen as the favorite by many in the Conservative Action Political Conference, he still faces internal challenges within the Republican Party, including former US representative to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, who is also seeking the presidential nomination.
The Conservative Action Political Conference is conducting a poll to choose Donald Trump’s possible running mate, which includes names such as Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, Representative Elise Stefanik of New York and Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio.
