MEXICO CITY (France24).- The French Parliament agreed this Thursday, May 2, to create a commission of inquiry to investigate sexual and gender violence in cinema and other cultural sectors, after several recent accusations.

The National Assembly unanimously agreed to the creation of the investigative commission, requested by actress Judith Godreche in a speech in the Senate last February.

The 52-year-old actress and director has become a key figure in the Me Too movement in France, since she accused directors Benoît Jacquot and Jacques Doillon of sexually assaulting her when she was a teenager. Both have denied the accusations.

It’s time to stop rolling out the red carpet for abusers

All 52 deputies present for the vote approved the creation of the commission. Godreche was among the audience at the Assembly.

“The time has come to stop rolling out the red carpet for abusers,” said the Ecologist party deputy, Francesca Pasquini.

The new commission must investigate “the condition of minors in the various sectors of film, television, fashion and advertising,” as well as the condition of adults working in these industries.

Based on Godreche’s proposal, the parliamentary Culture Committee decided to extend the jurisdiction of the investigation to other cultural sectors, beyond cinema.

The objective is to “identify mechanisms and failures that allow these potential abuses and violence”, “establish responsibilities” and make recommendations.

The National Assembly’s vote comes a day after actress Isild Le Besco, 41, claimed in her autobiography that she had also been “raped” by Jacquot during a relationship that began when she was 16, but that she was not prepared for it. Press charges.

Godreche, on the other hand, has sued the prominent film director for alleged abuse that occurred in their relationship when she was 14 and he was 39.

She also formally sued Doillon for abusing her when she was 15 and one of the actresses in the film he directed.
