Four young women were killed in a serious traffic accident on a French highway on Saturday evening, the local fire brigade reported. A fifth is in life-threatening condition.
The accident took place on Saturday evening around 7.15 pm on the A47 motorway near Dargoire, about thirty kilometers from Lyon in the Loire department. According to local media, for an unclear reason a collision occurred between a Volkswagen Polo and an Audi Q7, after which the Volkswagen rolled over and landed on its roof.
Four passengers of the Volkswagen, all young women believed to be between 18 and 20 years old according to local media, died on the spot. A fifth occupant, the driver, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
A family of six was in the Audi. The father (who was driving) and his four children were unharmed. The mother suffered minor injuries and was also taken to hospital. Four people who witnessed the accident were offered psychological help.
The exact cause of the accident remains to be investigated. It is reported that one of the vehicles involved may have been stationary on (the hard shoulder of) the highway at the time of the accident.
