Delgado explained that the arrest warrants have been obtained thanks to the more than 4,000 requests for the imposition of measures that the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) has presented to the corresponding courts and tribunals so that the gang members are prosecuted as a group (as structures) and not individual.
«We have presented a total of 4,452 requests for the imposition of measures in these two years of the regime, this has served to impose provisional detention against 71,356 gang members. Right now, at the stage we are in, it is to group all these people to be prosecuted for criminal organization, after that the trials will come, that is, the presentation before each of the judges of the different evidence that we have collected. », indicated the prosecutor.
Delgado also clarified that there are gang members who have already been convicted of crimes and judicial proceedings committed and initiated prior to the application of the state of emergency.
“What has happened is that some of these gang members had pending charges in other courts for other charges, for events that occurred before the application of the emergency regime, so the processes have also continued against these people and each one The corresponding penalty has been imposed,” he explained.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office statistics, of the 80,095 gang members captured, a total of 55,114 belong to the MS; 24,450 are part of gang 18 [10,258 a los revolucionarios y 14,192 a los sureños]; and 531 belong to other criminal structures such as Mao Mao and the Machine.
The department with the highest number of arrested gang members is San Salvador with 22,210, of these, 10,793 are from the MS, 11,159 from the 18 and 258 from other gangs; to Saint Salvador The department of Sonsonate follows with 9,780 captured, of which 7,224 are from the MS, 2,547 belong to the 18, and 9 to other terrorist structures.
While, in La Libertad, the authorities have detained 8,763 gang members, of these, 7,236 are part of the MS, 1,477 are from the 18, and 50 belong to other gangs.
