“The Courageous Women of Karachi” – A film by Rosa Lyon

Life for girls and women in Pakistan is much more difficult than in most other countries in the world. Although men and women have been equal in the constitution since 1973, violence, oppression and extreme disadvantage are the harsh reality in everyday life. In Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, ORF reporter Rosa Lyon meets four women who are moving mountains through their courage and persistent will. Pakistan’s first female architect, Yasmeen Lari, famous for her iconic buildings, is helping earthquake and flood displaced people build zero-emission, sustainable and durable homes. Aansoo Kohli, who is physically disabled herself, has also converted her cattle shed into a school. She didn’t want to stand idly by and accept that there is no education for some people. Muqaddas Tahir fights to protect the mangroves – and thus to preserve vital nature. And at Saba Edhi, young women and girls who were vulnerable and unprotected at home find security and therefore a better future.

Child marriage and forced marriage are officially prohibited, but young girls and women in India are still often forced into unwanted, early marriages. The consequences are serious: Without training, those affected are usually left with a life of dependency. And their daughters often have to continue this fatal tradition later. In Chennai, southern India, dedicated social workers are trying to break the vicious circle. Your “girls’ house” offers children and young people a refuge – and tries to give them a new perspective through good education and training. But the traditions go back a long way. The documentary accompanies a caretaker at the residential home in her convinced fight for a self-determined life for her protégés.
