A new party has been created in Armenia, “Ham-Armenian Front”. Former Minister of Defense Arshak Karapetyan, General Secretary Hovhannes Shahinyan were elected leaders. The party also has a political council. Hovhannes Shahinyan gave an interview to one of the media. It is a normal phenomenon, even demanded. The public needs to hear what kind of political platform the newly formed party has in order to decide how to treat it. The problem is how the “All-Armenian Front” formulates its actions or at least outlines them.

When asked why they openly support the Russian Federation, Hovhannes Shahinyan answered that today Russia is a superpower and “it professes Christian values, our age-old friendship must continue”. Literally, a few days ago, Russian President Vladimir Putin called his country “multi-confessional and multi-religious”. Moreover, he added that in the outside world, Russia “behaves in such a way that Islamic radicals cannot have the motivation to organize terrorism against it”.

It is a geopolitical reality that the power centers or superpowers compete fiercely to win the sympathy of the Islamic world. The observation of the Russian president “behaving as he is” in the outside world is a direct evidence of this. The same applies to the United States, China, the European Union. There can be no illusions here. A political fiasco is inevitable if the leader of the Armenian party ascribes to Russia a role for which the pan-Armenian unity of the last century did not justify itself, to put it mildly.

Of course, it is not Russia’s fault that the Armenian political-social science thought made such an attribution to it and became a hostage of its own imagination. But what is forgivable to, say, Hovhannes Tumanyan, that in 1913 was excited by the prospect of seeing the triumphal shield of Russia nailed to the gates of Tsargrad (Constantinople), today is an anachronism.

Of course, Armenia should have normal relations with Russia, but they should be based on objective-pragmatic interests and goals, not on the hypothesis of “Christian solidarity”, which has been devalued for a long time. Even in the case when Russia does not recognize itself as an absolute Christian country. Because that is what his national-state interest demands.
