The leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, ratified this Thursday in Brussels that there will be no agreement with the PSOE to renew the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) if at the same time a change in the law that regulates the election of the members of the governing body of judges.

“Renewal and law, law and renewal. That is the framework, and if not, we are not going to waste Commissioner Reynders’ time,” Feijóo said in statements to journalists after meeting in Brussels with the president of the European People’s Party, Manfred Weber, before the extraordinary European Council that It is celebrated in the Belgian capital.

Simultaneous issues

The president of the PP made these statements a day after the European Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders, also met in Brussels with the Minister of the Presidency and Justice, Félix Bolaños, and with the Deputy Secretary of Institutional Action of the PP, Esteban González Pons, to start a dialogue that could lead to an agreement for the renewal of the CGPJ.

From that meeting came a new meeting between the same protagonists on February 12, and while Bolaños said that we are facing what may be the “last opportunity” to reach an agreement, Pons was pessimistic but also ambitious, to try to close all the issues that are on the table.

Among them, the PP’s intention that not only the renewal of the CGPJ be agreed, but also a change in the law that establishes its election.

The Government insists that the renewal must first be agreed upon and then we can talk about possible legislative modifications.

However, Feijóo has been forceful regarding the process that has been opened and has stressed that the two issues must be simultaneous.

The position of the European Commission

“That is why we have met. We have met for the renewal of the Council, for a commitment to the regeneration of the conditions to be part of the Council and the Constitutional Court and, of course, for a new law that deepens judicial independence,” he stressed.

After insisting that the PP has these three objectives in mind, not just one, he pointed out that “nothing will be closed as long as everything is not closed.”

Given the fact that the European Commission sees renewal as a priority and then immediately addresses the reform of the law, it has considered that this is not a requirement of the community institution.

Feijóo explained that this consideration that appears in the report on the rule of law prepared by the Commission is framed “in the context of a report on the rule of law, not in the context of this negotiation.”

The leader of the PP has stated that the Commission knows very well what position it defends, a new law and renewal.

“Both. Only one of them is not possible,” Feijóo reiterated.

The amnesty law

The president of the PP has commented that he has also spoken with Weber about the amnesty law that was rejected by the plenary session of Congress last Tuesday and in which he regretted the “massive attack” that there was against the Spanish judges by the Government and of its partners.

An “alarm” that he has stated is shared by the European People’s Party and its president because “these are not good times for judicial independence in Spain.” With EFE
