The head of the Special Prosecutor’s Office Against Impunity (FECI), Rafael Curruchichespoke this Wednesday, February 21, about the sanctions imposed by the government of Canada against him and three other people accused of undermining democracy and the rule of law in Guatemala. In that context, he considered that these types of actions taken by the international community “are laughable.”
“There is a very popular saying in Guatemala that says ‘the donkey returns to the wheat’, right, and I think it applies to this because it is already the false, hypocritical narrative of the European Union, the United States, the UN, the OAS and now from Canada,” he told reporters at the court tower.
According to his words, what the Public Ministry (MP) did was unmask what happened on June 25 and August 20 in Guatemala, that is, during the first and second round of the 2023 electoral process, in which it was elected as president of the republic, Bernardo Arévalo, nominated by the Semilla Movement party.

Curruchiche pointed out that the institution, through an objective and impartial investigation, pointed out irregularities that occurred within the framework of the elections, but also in the constitution of the aforementioned political party. “And that bothered them,” he added.
“There is a very obsessed person in the United States Department of State and that’s where everything comes from, so this new sanction that Canada has issued, now Canada, really makes me laugh,” he said.
Likewise, the prosecutor assured that he is very respectful of the laws of Guatemala and made it clear that he does not pay homage or honor to anyone.
“It is a laughable and absurd sanction,” he finally said about the restrictions issued by the Canadian government, through which he is prohibited from accessing that territory and managing finances in entities of that nation.
