The Indonesian men’s badminton team failed to widen their lead over Thailand in the second match of Group C of the 2024 Thomas Cup. This happened after Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto were defeated by Peeratchai Sukphun/Pakkapon Teeraratsakul, in a fierce rubber game battle 19-21, 21-14, 11- 21 at Chengdu Hi Tech Zone Sports Center Gymnasium, Monday (29/4/2024).
Fajar/Rian faced fierce resistance in the first game. The world number seven pair tried to match Peeratchai/Pakkapon’s game until they ended up 14-14.
However, at critical points, Peeratchai/Pakkapon actually performed much better, winning the first game 21-19 in 15 minutes. This is the first time Fajar/Rian have lost a game in the 2024 Thomas Cup Group C preliminary match.
In the second game, Fajar/Rian tried to get up. However, the pair ranked 52nd in the world were able to put up resistance, and the score was tied at 2-2.
But when Fajar/Rian started to find their best playing rhythm, the Thai pair were only able to add three points before finally Fajri took an 11-5 lead in the second interval.
After the break, Fajar/Rian tried to maintain their lead. Point after point was won until finally forcing the match to continue into a deciding game after winning the second game with a score of 21-14.
In the deciding game, Fajar/Rian really struggled. They were behind 6-10.
Fajri tried to catch up, but Peeratchai/Pakkapon were still too strong so they managed to win points for Thailand after winning 21-11. For now, the score is tied at 1-1 and this is the first defeat experienced by the Indonesian men’s team in the 2024 Thomas Cup.
