Fact Check: This post claiming that Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi have been declared Congress candidates from Amethi and Rae Bareli is fake.

In a post viral on social media, a press release allegedly issued by the Congress is being shared claiming that the party has declared Rahul Gandhi as the Congress candidate from Amethi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from Rae Bareli constituencies for the current Lok Sabha elections. Vishvas News investigation proved the claim to be false. We found that the press release being shared in the name of Congress is fake. The party has not announced its candidates for Amethi and Rae Bareli seats in Uttar Pradesh till the time of publishing this fact check.

What is there in the viral post?

A Facebook user named ‘Youth Congress Shahdol’ (Archive) shared this post on May 1 and wrote, “Rahul Gandhi from Amethi and Priyanka Gandhi from Rae Bareli have jumped into the fray. It will be interesting to see whether Smriti Irani beats this time too or gets defeated. It would have been better if Priyanka Gandhi had fought against Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Varanasi. In politics, sometimes message matters more than victory, which Raj Narayan ji once did by contesting elections against former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Later his victory became a chapter in the pages of history.”

investigation

We started the investigation with Google open search. We did not find any news of announcement of Congress candidates from Amethi and Rae Bareli anywhere. Both these seats are quite high profile. In such a situation, if candidates were announced for these two seats, it would definitely have been in the news. However, we did receive reports that Congress candidates have not been announced yet for both these seats.

After this we searched the official social media accounts of Congress. We did not find any post announcing the candidates on these two seats anywhere.

On searching we found the list of four Lok Sabha candidates released by the Congress party at 8:22 pm on April 30. The list included the names of Raj Babbar, Anand Sharma, Satpal Raizada and Bhushan Patil, who got tickets from Gurgaon, Kangra, Hamirpurad and Mumbai North respectively.

We contacted All India Congress Committee (AICC) internal communication in-charge Vineet Punia regarding this matter, who called this post fake.

On comparing the screenshot of the list of Congress candidates released on April 30 and the list used in the viral post, many similarities are seen, which suggest that the viral list has been prepared by editing this list. The similarities between the two can be seen in the collage below.

Let us tell you that in the fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections, voting will be held on Amethi and Rae Bareli seats on May 20. The last date for filing nominations for seats in this phase is May 3.

The viral post was shared by a Facebook user named Shiv Das with misleading claims. The user has more than 800 followers.
