Fact Check: BBC Exit Poll Viral on Social Media Misleadingly Claimed as 2024 Election Poll Actually from 2019

The video going viral with the claim of BBC’s exit poll for Lok Sabha elections 24 is not of any pre-poll or post-poll survey, but of the counting of votes after the 2019 elections, which is being shared in the election context with a false claim.

New Delhi (Viswas News). Amid the ongoing voting for the Lok Sabha elections 24, a video is going viral on social media, in which citing the BBC exit poll, a lead of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies and defeat of the Congress and its allies has been claimed.

Vishvas News found this to be false in its investigation. The viral video clip is not of any exit poll but of the 2019 election results in which the BJP-led alliance got a huge majority.

It is worth noting that according to the rules, no survey can be released during the elections. According to the notification of the Election Commission, the broadcast of exit polls will be prohibited from 7 am on April 19 (first phase of voting) to 6.30 pm on June 1 (seventh phase of voting).

What is viral?

Social media user ‘Sanatani Hindu Rakesh (Modi’s family)’ shared the viral video Video id=’action_msg_1373’> Link) has been posted and called as BBC exit poll.

The reporter/anchor seen in the viral video clip can be heard giving information about the BJP alliance leading in 347 seats and the Congress and its allies leading in more than 87 seats. Listening to the video, it is clear that the viral clip is not of any poll, but of the counting of votes.

Since the last and seventh phase of voting for Lok Sabha election 24 is still remaining, it cannot be related to the current election.

To find the original source of the viral video clip, we did a reverse image search of the key frames obtained with the help of InVid tool. In the search, we found a video uploaded on the official YouTube channel of ‘BBC News’.

This video, uploaded in 2019, is of the results of the then Lok Sabha elections, in which the BJP and its allies under the leadership of Narendra Modi got a clear majority.

That is, the viral video clip is not of any pre or post poll, but of the counting of votes after the last general election. During the last several elections, such poll data has been shared in the name of BBC. In reality, BBC neither conducts pre-election surveys i.e. opinion polls nor exit polls after elections.

Vishvas News has earlier investigated the viral survey in the name of BBC News during the election season. In fact, BBC does not conduct any kind of pre-poll survey in India. Vishvas News contacted BBC via email regarding the viral post. Refuting the viral election survey, BBC said, “BBC does not conduct any kind of election survey. We confirm that this is fake news being spread in the name of BBC.”
