People with liver diseases smell like baked apples.
Publika.az reports that Russian gastroenterologist Vladimir Neronov said these words in an interview with Lenta.ru. Talking about the smells coming from people suffering from various diseases, the expert noted that the intensity of body odors is directly proportional to the severity of the disease. Also, the intensity of the smell depends on how a person takes care of the body.
“Diabetes will smell like acetone, people with digestive system diseases will smell of decay and rotten eggs. People with urinary system diseases will smell of ammonia, and people with liver diseases will smell of baked apples,” said the doctor.
According to Neronov, specific body odor can be explained by the presence of certain microorganisms and the function of skin glands.
“If a pathogen enters the body, it disrupts the balance of bacteria. At the same time, the compounds responsible for normal body odor also change. Immunity reacts to these processes in a certain way, which affects the smell of a person.
The skin is an excretory organ and, if necessary, takes over part of the function of the kidneys. When pathological products are formed in the body, it begins to secrete them, which affects the creation of a special aroma.
The disease can affect the smell not only of a sick person, but also of people around. “If you live with a sick person, your body can emit an unpleasant odor characteristic of the disease,” the gastroenterologist concluded.
