DIRECT FROM PARIS – The planet is warming, drought is increasing. But that this should also apply to Czech Olympians? After the fourth day of competition, they still have an unflattering record in Paris: zero medals won.
At the same time, the Czech expedition already had enough irons in the proverbial fire. Jiří Lipták (42), defending gold from Tokyo, was probably the biggest disappointment, as he failed the trap qualification this time. “I don’t just shoot for myself, but also for the fans, for the parents, for the children. They tell me: Dad, you’ll win anyway! They have some expectations, but it’s not that simple.” shrugged the veteran shooter, who ended up finishing 18th. In addition to Lipták, fencers led by Choupenitch and kayaker Galušková also failed.
Slovaks also celebrated
So far, the best Czech placings are the two sixth places of swimmer Barbora Seemanová (24) and water slalom skier Lukáš Rohan (29), which is quite beyond expectations. Even considering that the joy of a medal has already been experienced in Paris by, for example, Mongolians, Kosovars, fighters from Fiji, or even Moldovans twice. After all, Slovaks also have a bronze thanks to canoeist Matej Beňuš (26)…
Like a record
The good news, however, is that waiting for a pancake does not mean a drought at the end of the Games. At the record-breakingly successful Olympics (4 golds, 4 silvers and 3 bronzes) in Tokyo three years ago, there was a wait of three days, and in London 2012 even five. And it could also be broken in Paris on the fifth day of the game – three Czech hopefuls will timidly look for the precious metal today: biker Iveta Miculyčová (18), judoka David Klammert (30) and especially slalom skier Gabriela Satková (22)!
