Ecuador defends assault on the Mexican embassy before the ICJ

Ecuador assured this Wednesday before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that the invasion of the Mexican embassy in Quito was an “exceptional” act.

On the second day of oral hearings for a demand for preventive measures requested by Mexico, Ecuador’s main agent before the ICJ, diplomat Andrés Terán Parral, stated that “the isolated incident of April 5 was just that. “It took place under very exceptional circumstances.”

“We regret and reject that Mexico questions our good faith,” added the Ecuadorian diplomat.

Demand from Ecuador to Mexico
Likewise, Ecuador formalized a lawsuit on Monday against Mexico, a country it accuses of failing to comply with its obligations in light of international law.

In particular, Ecuador questions the improper use of the Embassy facilities to protect former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas from the actions of the Ecuadorian justice system, in addition to interfering in the country’s internal affairs.

Arrest of asylum seeker Jorge Glas
On the night of April 5, armed men from the Ecuadorian security forces invaded the Mexican embassy in Quito, in an unprecedented scandal in the region.

The armed men forcibly took away Jorge Glas, prosecuted by the Ecuadorian justice system and who had been granted asylum status by the Mexican authorities.

Jorge Glas remains under arrest, although Mexico claims that Glas still enjoys asylum status. For its part, Ecuador maintains that the granting of asylum to Glas was illegal, since he is an accused by the common justice system.

Meanwhile, Mexico claims that it is up to the receiving State to define whether there are elements to conclude whether or not the benefit of asylum is possible.
