The Earth has just received a laser transmission from a record distance of 200 million kilometers, which means an important advance in space exploration and even raises new possibilities for the future of interplanetary travel.

However, this signal did not come from an extraterrestrial origin, it was sent by NASA’s Psyche spacecraftwhich is currently located at a distance of approximately 1.5 times the distance between the Earth and the Sun.

“This represents a significant step for the project by demonstrating the effectiveness of optical communications in combination with a spacecraft’s radio frequency communications system,” explained Meera Srinivasan, project operations leader at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Psyche is scheduled to fly by Mars in 2026 and then head towards its main destination, the asteroid 16 Psyche, which is expected to reach in 2029.

Their mission will be to map this final frontier, a sort of cosmic El Dorado that houses enough precious metals to shake up the gold market.
