Vienna (OTS)

  • February 15th to April 15th exhibition “Civil Courage in Partner Violence and Domestic Violence”
  • Collaboration with StoP – Districts without Partner Violence, a project of the Autonomous Austrian Women’s Shelters Association, AÖF

The exhibition “Civil Courage Against Partner Violence” has been running at the Göttlicher Heiland Hospital since February 15th. It can be viewed free of charge until April 15th. Ten roll-ups designed by illustrator Silke Müller on the subject of partner violence and domestic violence are set up in the hospital’s outpatient department for 8 weeks. The first half of the exhibition dispels myths and prejudices about domestic violence and violence against women. The second half shows methods of moral courage for neighbors and witnesses of violence. The exhibition was opened by Fiona Eslami Tehrani, Msc, StoP coordinator in the Hernals district and MMag.a Maja Markanović-Riedl, co-managing director of the AÖF association, together with employees and the hospital’s board. “I am very pleased that the exhibition is so well received,” sums up Mag.a Michaela Latzelsberger, managing director at the Göttlicher Heiland Hospital. “We succeeded in drawing attention to this important social issue. We will continue to give violence protection the space it needs.”

StoP – districts without partner violence

The exhibition is an initiative by StoP – Districts Without Partner Violence and is intended to raise public awareness of the issue of domestic violence and violence against women. “The extent of violence against women in Austria is alarmingly high. It is important to remove taboos from the topic and talk about preventative measures,” explains Fiona Eslami Tehrani, Msc. “The consequences of violence range from mental illness to physical injuries to femicide.” Hospitals are therefore often a contact point for women affected by violence. Doctors and nurses therefore play an important key role in preventing violence.

Violence prevention and support in hospitals

“Health care facilities are important partners in protecting against violence. At the Göttlicher Heiland Hospital there is a double focus in this regard,” explains Barbara Lehner, Values Director at the Göttlicher Heiland Hospital. “We are sensitive to patients who come to us with experiences of violence and try to provide support. Prevention and de-escalation are the focus for employees. The house alarm is also available for emergencies where immediate help is needed. Nursing staff play an important role in highlighting violence as they are in regular contact with patients who have experienced violence. Caregivers may notice something in their daily routine, for example when providing personal care to patients, that they can report. “Violence, aggression, sexism and coercion are issues that are unfortunately becoming increasingly important in the healthcare system and in hospitals,” says Mag.a Michaela Latzelsberger, managing director of the Göttlicher Heiland Hospital. “Every day, healthcare professionals experience violence against patients or are themselves affected by aggression and violence in everyday work. We therefore speak out clearly against any form of violence and also take appropriate measures in our facility.”

What is StoP?
The neighborhood project StoP – Districts without Partner Violence aims to stop and prevent partner violence and domestic violence against women and children through numerous activities. The target groups at StoP are neighbors and multipliers of all ages, nationalities, genders and religions.

With the women’s and men’s tables, but also activating conversations at apartment doors, we want to reach many people and encourage them to exercise moral courage against partner violence. With civil courage workshops, we train multipliers how they can act effectively and with self-protection in mind against violence in their environment.

The StoP project was designed by Prof. Sabine Stövesand at the HAW in Hamburg and is coordinated by the Association of Autonomous Austrian Women’s Shelters, AÖF in Austria.
