Dust covers Dien Bien Phu city (Dien Bien province) as a series of infrastructure projects are racing to complete before the 70th anniversary of victory.
Nam Rom River, the symbolic river of Dien Bien Phu City, is running dry. The city faces a difficult problem when the river bed must be dredged and water brought back to create landscape before May 7.
According to reporters, the construction unit has mobilized many large excavators and trucks to speed up the dredging progress. Progress is very urgent because the completion deadline is April 20.
Both banks of Nam Rom River near Muong Thanh bridge are covered in smoke and dust due to dredging activities. Dust also spread along the route of trucks carrying soil out of the construction site.
Not only the Nam Rom riverbed, many central streets of Dien Bien Phu are also becoming construction sites.
Dien Bien Phu these days has the presence of many tourists, as well as cultural troupes coming to cultural exchanges and cyclists participating in racing competitions. The chaotic construction of the roads somewhat affects the experience of these distant guests.
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Dai, a hotel business in Thanh Binh ward, said dust from the construction site affects the experience of guests. He witnessed the sidewalk repair project in front of his house starting in September 2023, the construction was “turtle-crawling” and it was not until the day of the great ceremony that it was hastily completed.
In Muong Thanh ward, the paving of sidewalks and the median strip is being urgently implemented. This project also needs to be completed soon because it is located close to Dien Bien province stadium, where the military parade to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory will take place.
Talk to reporters Dan tri, a contractor said that the city government had requested construction activities to only be carried out until April 20. After this date, whether the project has been completed or not, it must be temporarily stopped, cleaned and the site returned to serve the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory.
Dust from construction sites combined with smoke and ash from slash-and-burn activities has caused the sky of Dien Bien Phu to be engulfed in fog for many days, with no horizon visible.
Located about 2km east of Nam Rom River, a 60m wide road has been completed, named Road 7/5. A park with modern design was also built right next to the road. This traffic axis shows the latest changes in the urban appearance of Dien Bien Phu.
On the extended 7/5 road, a new route is also being constructed.
Infrastructure investments for Dien Bien Phu City have been deployed aggressively over the past many years. Looking at the positive side, this is a signal that the locality is transforming with the goal of becoming a class II city in the next few years.
