Bangladesh Paint Manufacturers Association (BPMA) has demanded withdrawal of 5 percent supplementary duty imposed on local production considering paints and dye products as essential products.

Apart from this, the organization has some other demands, including formulation of specific business-friendly policies for determining customs duty on the release of imported raw materials.

A delegation of BPMA met Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun at the Ministry of Industries on Wednesday. At this time, the delegation brought up to the minister the various problems and obstacles faced by industrial establishments producing dyes and dye products.

At this time, the minister listened attentively to their problems and prospects and assured them of possible solutions. He gave various suggestions to the paint delegation for the development of this industry.

On behalf of BPMA, General Secretary and Head of Plant Operations of Nippon Paint Arun Mitra told the Minister that various recommendations were made in the pre-budget discussion of the financial year 2021-22 by the organization with the aim of developing the industry of paints and dye products and removing real obstacles. But as they have not yet been implemented, several industrial establishments of this product have been closed, some establishments are about to be closed.

Arun Mitra made some other demands to keep the industry alive. They are, for the purpose of guaranteeing the production of lead-free paints, the application of high duty rates on lead-rich raw materials and the provision of duty-free import of lead-free raw materials, the provision of easy availability of specific pesticides used as raw materials in the local market to maintain the quality and quality of paints and dye-like products. Increasing the duty free cost of marketing from 0.5 percent to 3 percent of the total sales, making a simple policy of taxation, making a proper policy for the import of foreign paints and dye-like products, setting up specific chemical industrial areas in the vicinity of Dhaka for the paint manufacturing industry.

In the meeting, the Minister said that the recommendations proposed by BPMA are logical. He expressed interest in setting up a separate industrial park for this industry through BCIC. He requested the delegation to submit a proper proposal in this regard. Moreover, he suggested organizing a seminar with the relevant stakeholders to implement the recommendations or demands of BPMA.
