MEXICO CITY (apro).- British actor Daniel Radcliffe, famous for playing the main character in the Harry Potter films, admitted that he has not spoken to JK Rowling for years, author of the novels that inspired the film saga and who has sparked controversy for his transphobic positions.

In 2019, JK Rowling sparked controversy on social media after posting a tweet defending a researcher who was fired from her job for stating that “men cannot become women.” Since then she has not stopped expressing similar positions, and she has even gone so far as to criticize the neutral bathrooms of the UNAM in Mexico.

Her position has been strongly repudiated on social networks to the point that she herself has complained about being identified as a TERF (Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist), which she considers an insult.

“This makes me sad”

This time it was the actor who during his childhood and adolescence played the magician in youth novels who established his position in an interview with the magazine The Atlantic.

“This ultimately saddens me greatly,” Radcliffe said of Rowling’s heavily criticized views in the note published April 30.

There he mentioned that he has not spoken directly with the writer since June 2020.

“I look at the person I knew, the times we met, the books he wrote and the world he created, and I find all of that deeply empathetic,” Radcliffe said.

At the time, Radcliffe decided to issue a stance through the Trevor Project, an LGBTQ charity with which he had long been associated, in which he spoke out against Rowling, arguing that “transgender women are women”.

“I had worked with the Trevor Project for 12 years and it would have seemed like, I don’t know, immense cowardice not to say something,” Radcliffe told The Atlantic. “I wanted to try to help people who had been negatively affected by the comments. “And to say that if those are Jo’s views, then they are not the views of everyone associated with the Potter franchise.”

The actor acknowledged that Harry Potter would not have happened without Rowling, “so probably nothing in my life would have happened the way it is without her.” However, he clarified, “that doesn’t mean I owe the things I believe in to someone else for a lifetime.”

“Apologies”

On April 10, an …”.

The writer responded: “I’m afraid it’s not safe. Celebrities who embraced a movement that attempted to erode women’s hard-won rights and who used their platforms to encourage the transition of minors can spare their apologies.”

Asked about this stance, Radcliffe simply said: “I will continue to support the rights of all LGBTQ people and will not be commenting further.”
