The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that over-the-counter syrups used in the treatment of children were contaminated, and because of this, more than 300 children from 7 countries died in 2022.

Publika.az reports that the statement emphasized that industrial solvents and antifreezes are mixed in syrups.

The WHO issued an “urgent call for action” yesterday after authorities in Gambia, Indonesia and Uzbekistan said the syrups had been contaminated and caused the deaths of more than 300 children by 2022.

It should be noted that most of them are children under the age of five.

WHO said that they have sent the warning notices to the health authorities of 194 member states.

In the “contaminated drug product warning” of WHO dated January 11, it was stated that the non-prescription cough syrups used in the treatment of children were analyzed by the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan and the results were reported.

“As a result of the laboratory analysis of the samples taken from both products by the national quality control laboratories of the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan, it was found that there were unacceptable amounts of pollutants in both products,” the warning issued on January 11 stated.
