Do you need a lot of vertical image space for your work? Then the 32″ 4K models are absolutely ideal. But manufacturers will probably soon resent it.

In twenty-five years in the computer world, I have witnessed two major monitor revolutions: the transition from CRT to LCD, when flat-panel monitors were frowned upon for their slowness, lackluster picture, and ridiculous price, and the general retreat from the 4:3 aspect ratio in favor of the “extreme wide” 16:9 page aspect ratio. This also met with criticism. The trend towards further “expansion” of monitors has already occurred and work monitors will be victims of it.

Alphabetical list of tested models

Height matters

The 32″ monitors we tested with a 16:9 aspect ratio and 4K resolution (3,880 × 2,160 px) are slowly but surely being overtaken by the more attractive 34″ models with a 21:9 aspect ratio and WQHD (3,440 × 1,440 px). ). We don’t have to argue about the suitability of this format that has only been new for a few years for the world of computer games. Especially in the curved version, they can really absorb you better in the virtual world.

But the computer world is still full of programmers, graphic designers, photographers, engineers, translators, researchers and dozens of other professions who appreciate a computer with sufficient space in the vertical direction. And as you can see from the numbers above, a 32″ 4K monitor will offer half the pixels of a more modern wide format. If this is also the case for your workload, get smarter. 32″ 4K resolution monitors “start at over twenty thousand, today it costs a quarter. Are you still worried about a small 24″ display? Give yourself more, your work will become more efficient and you won’t regret the investment.

Samsung has equipped its monitor with a built-in camera with a surprisingly good image. You don’t need anything else for video calls

Clear categories

Let’s take a closer look at the category of tested monitors, first of all from the point of view of price and equipment. There are three categories:

The cheapest is represented by equals VA monitoring with a price often well below ten thousand crowns. The VA panel is not a bad choice, it offers excellent contrast, suitable for those who like to watch movies and series on the computer.

Equipped monitors appear with a price above ten thousand IPS panel, which at the same time offer better connection options. In particular, the USB-C interface has made connecting laptops much easier. You come to work, connect the monitor’s USB-C port and immediately transfer not only the image, but also the audio and all peripherals connected to the monitor. And the monitor in return will charge your laptop. Additionally, five of the six monitors tested are equipped with Gigabit Ethernet, so the data will go there too instead of burdening the Wi-Fi. Reverse charging usually has a power of 65 W, but 90 W is no exception. By the way, this function allows you to leave the laptop charger at home, while at the workplace the monitor will serve as a charger and docking station Together. .

Monitors equipped with an IPS panel do not offer this contrast, but the level of transmittance around the edges is decreased and when viewed from the side the image does not change as much as with VA panels. Keep this in mind when making your choice if you plan to have multiple colleagues around your new monitor and deal with colors and graphics.

They are even more expensive special monitors. In our test they are represented by BenQ, which excels with factory-accurate colors and all possible graphics support. Thanks to the MiniLED panel, Lenovo is technologically interesting, although extremely expensive. While the competition usually goes up to 400 nits, Lenovo goes three times more. But it will only be appreciated by creators who want to offer their content in HDR. Here, however, we are rather skeptical and think that MiniLED will give way to the more massive introduction of OLEDs.

BenQ adds this handy control disc to its graphics monitor. You can choose the functions of the three buttons and turn the wheel.

A positive consequence of the generally higher price category of the tested monitors is the good ergonomics and the good range of connectors. All monitors, except one, come with a sturdy, high-quality stand with height adjustment, most of them can be rotated vertically or tilted. All but one of the monitors in the test come with a USB hub.

The most modern models will offer, in addition to the standard USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 connectors with a speed of 5 Gb/s, a USB-C connector, usually used to connect and charge the phone. There’s a reason for this: USB-A only offers 5W power, which would charge the phone for a really long time. USB-C handles three times more power, up to 15W. And speaking of watts, notice how much cheaper IPS monitors are than VA panels at the same brightness.

Players: Don’t expect a higher frequency

Evidence of the gradual farewell to these monitors is the essentially interrupted development of the panels. None of the tested monitors offered a refresh rate higher than the now obsolete 60 Hz. After all, even the cheapest and most common 24″ monitors offer 144 Hz. But it’s not just a question of the panel: manufacturers should also update the interface, especially HDMI. The limit of version 2.0 is only 4K/60 Hz, you would say “they have to move to HDMI 2.1 and that costs money not only in development, but also in production. It makes sense that they make this effort on gaming monitors and not work monitors. At the same time, there are only a limited number of manufacturers of the panels themselves, none of the monitor manufacturers can be expected to offer anything new additionally.

On the other hand: a target audience that spends the day at work probably doesn’t need to enjoy extra hours of super-fast competitive gaming. If you play some kind of strategy, role-playing game, even racing, 60 Hz will be enough – after all, it was enough for us for about 15 years. At least for this category of monitors, it is not true that monitors equipped with a VA panel are fundamentally less suitable for gaming than those with an IPS panel, as was the case before.

Television in the monitor

In the test we also have two monitors combined with TV functions. LG and Samsung are actually televisions without a digital terrestrial tuner. At the same time they contain the webOS and Tizen systems, have up-to-date applications and can therefore function completely without a computer. Today’s youth don’t care about television anyway, so it’s perfect for small student rooms, where it can do two things: as a computer monitor and as a TV for watching your favorite series in the evening. We must highlight the LG supplied on a universal ergonomic stand, which offers enormous freedom of movement. Before you buy, consider the layout of your workplace and you may find that this is exactly what you are missing in terms of perfection.

Unfortunately, the tested monitors are withdrawing from the market, which is a shame, because they offer enormous vertical space

But we know from previous experience that with these TVs and monitors it took a lot of fiddling with the settings to reach a state where the monitor simply takes the input and displays it without the intervention of any intelligent function. Fortunately, the manufacturers have also learned from the reviewers’ criticisms, and both tested models show a good image after unpacking, plugging in and connecting to a computer. Of course, further tuning is unnecessarily complicated and completely different from simple monitors. On the other hand, remote controls are a nice plus for both smart monitors.

LG and Samsung monitors can function independently as televisions without a TV tuner, so they also offer the classic TV remote control

Endangered species

What can we generally criticize about the tested monitors? They’re probably just really, really crappy speakers. With perhaps the exception of LG and HP, the speakers are very underpowered and the quality is often not sufficient for spoken word.

Especially the cheaper models in our test are already quite bearded and we have information that this is their swansong. It paves the way for more attractive gaming wide-angle curved models. Models in the ten thousand plus category with a better array of connectors and an IPS display will probably remain on the market for some time, and manufacturers are also innovating them a little, but we cannot expect to pay much attention to other modern features. We will probably have to wait for the expansion of OLED technology.
