“I have instructed the Minister of National Defense, Maya Fernández, to contact the commander in chief of the Army, General Javier Iturriaga, so that on Friday, upon returning from this three-day tour that we are doing through the Region of O ‘Higgins, both attend La Moneda,’ reported President Gabriel Boric in the Peralillo commune.
The call is framed in the case that shakes the Army: the death of conscript Franco Vargas in Putre during military training. The President explained that he called General Iturriaga “so that he can personally detail the events in the meeting that we will hold and also all the measures that will be taken to prevent these events from being repeated again.”
The President added: “The young people who serve the country are under the care of the Chilean Army and must be treated with dignity.”
It will be Defense Minister Maya Fernández who will maintain “permanent contact with the family,” explained the President. In her case, “on Monday I am going to meet with her, with Franco’s mother, with Romina Vargas, who I knew was also in different instances so that this terrible thing that happened became known.”
In the middle of a tour in the O’Higgins Region, President Boric stated that “although nothing can ease the pain of the loss of a child, I want you to know that we are going to help you, we are going to accompany you and we are going to worry about Let the whole truth be known.”
