China has announced that it will not hold a press conference at the end of the annual parliamentary meeting. This rule will be effective from this year. Chinese Premier Li Qiang will not hold a press conference at the end of the annual parliamentary session this year, a Chinese official said on Monday (March 4). Through this, the country’s three-decade-long tradition has come to an end. British news agency Reuters reported this news.

Since 1993, Chinese premiers have been holding press conferences after the annual gathering of the National People’s Congress (NPC). As a result, foreign journalists usually get a rare opportunity to ask questions at an elaborate press conference.

NPC spokesman Lu Qingjian explained the country’s decision at a press conference on Monday. He said, the government ministers will hold more briefings during the annual parliamentary meeting. There, senior cabinet officials will discuss issues related to diplomacy, economy and people’s livelihood.

Meanwhile, Lu also said that the prime minister will not hold any media briefing in the future closing meeting of the NPC.

Last year, Li held his first media conference as China’s premier at the country’s annual parliamentary closing. He wanted to reassure the private sector of the country.
