Beijing does not plan to host matches involving Inter Miami CF star footballer Lionel Messi, the Global Times newspaper reported this Saturday, citing the Beijing Football Association. At the same time, the Hangzhou Sports Committee also announced the cancellation of the friendly match between Argentina and Nigeria, scheduled for March.

“Due to known reasons, the competent authorities considered that the appropriate conditions for holding the event do not exist and the decision has been made to cancel it,” reads the statement published on the WeChat messaging service.

The information came just after a scandal involving Messi, during a recent soccer match in China. Last Sunday, the match between the Argentina and Hong Kong national teams caused a wave of indignation among fans, as Messi spent the entire time on the bench due to a hamstring strain. The unrest was generated, in part, because the price of tickets for the match, which was attended by almost 40,000 fans, reached 4,880 Hong Kong dollars (624 US dollars).

Angry fans demanded their money back and Hong Kong authorities expressed their outrage to the match organisers. With RT
