Chairman of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) requested the Facebook authorities to take effective measures to stop rumors and misinformation on various issues. Mohiuddin Ahmed. On Thursday (March 21) at noon, a delegation of tech giant Meta came to the BTRC office in Agargaon of the capital for a courtesy meeting with the chairman of the organization. He made this request while discussing various issues there.

The delegation included Mater Public Policy Head Rujan Sarwar, Privacy and AI Matter Expert Arian Jimenez, Content Affairs Specialist Nayantara Narayan, Content Policy Specialist Jonathan Lewis and Policy Program Manager Rusi Teo.

The delegation briefed the BTRC Chairman on various current affairs of Facebook including their activities in Bangladesh and regular communication with BTRC. Thanked the Chairman for facilitating the management of MTA activities with BTRC due to long good relationship.

BTRC Chairman Mohiuddin Ahmed requested for more effective measures to stop rumours. He expressed apprehension that misinformation and rumors will spread quickly as a large number of internet users in the country use Facebook and Instagram platforms. He also requested the Facebook authorities to take action quickly in this regard.

The BTRC chairman urged the Facebook authorities to pay more attention to using the Metar platform to prevent criminals from conducting fraudulent activities, betting or gambling campaigns. For this reason, Mohiuddin Ahmed requested to take measures to automatically identify and remove such content as soon as it is published through the use of artificial intelligence.

During the discussion, the BTRC Chairman requested the Facebook delegation to conduct various awareness activities related to safe online usage for the people of Bangladesh and take up awareness campaign activities to increase the digital signature of common people.

Rujan Sarwar, head of public policy at Mater, welcomed BTRC’s views and expressed interest in working more closely with the organization.
