This Monday, The group of workers known as “Under the screens of misery” called for a strike during the next Cannes Film Festival, scheduled from May 14 to 25, in its 77th edition.

Despite the call, the Festival has not yet officially responded.
The decision to call the strike was made after an assembly that had the participation of 50 people, where they detailed that their objective is not to interrupt the opening gala of the Festivalbut it could affect the normal development of the event.
The group, independent of the main French unions, represents various professionals in the sector, such as projectionists, programmers, press and ticket sales personnel, as well as as those in charge of attending to the guests.
Workers are requesting a specific contribution and remuneration system for employees of the entertainment sector in France.
In France, employees in areas such as cinema, theater or music are considered “intermittent”, which allows them to access benefits such as unemployment and continue contributing to retirement or public health under certain conditions, even when they are not working.
Despite previous communications, the statement indicates that there have been no concrete proposals from the National Film Center nor of culture Ministry.

The Cannes Film Festival has only been altered once in its history, during the riots of May 1968, when it had to be canceled early.
Next week, the event will begin with the presentation of around a hundred films in different sections, and will feature the presence of stars such as Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas y Meryl Streep.
