Calls for a ceasefire and negotiations at the Easter March

It has become a habit – and for bad reasons. Because geopolitical conflicts are increasing around the world, there have been repeated calls for peace marches at Easter in Luxembourg in recent years. Last year, around 300 people called for an end to Putin’s war in Ukraine. This year is no different. However, the Middle East conflict has flared up again since Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

The Friddensplattform, together with the Comité pour une Paix Juste au Proche-Orient (CPJPO), has called for an Easter march to demonstrate against “the killing in Ukraine and Gaza”. Around 200 people were present at the march from Glacis to Krautmarkt. The march, which began at 2:30 p.m., was followed by a rally in front of the Chamber. In addition to the Friddensplattform and CPJPO, Déi Lénk and her youth organization were also present, as was the Communist Party of Luxembourg.

Negotiations with Russia “taking into account the territorial integrity of Ukraine”

The rally called for a ceasefire in the Middle East and Ukraine. In the war between Russia and Ukraine, peace negotiations are intended to bring a solution “taking into account the territorial integrity of Ukraine”. Although one condemns Russia’s attack on sovereign Ukraine, which violates international law, “the answer cannot be that new weapon systems continue to fuel the war,” says a joint letter from the Friddensplattform and the CPJPO. Both organizations also condemn Hamas’ attack on Israel, but also “the Israeli army’s murderous attacks in the Gaza Strip.”

At the demonstration at the Krautmarkt, the actors present were also critical of the current spiral of armament that the two wars would lead to and the associated “profits of the arms industry”.
