Bulgaria reacted cautiously to the election victory of VMRO-DPMNE, which is expected to form a government in North Macedonia, and warned that it will insist on fulfilling the commitments made.
President Rumen Radev commented that very soon it will be clear whether the newly elected President of the Republic of North Macedonia Gordana Siljanovska and the party VMRO-DPMNE will work for the European perspective of Skopje.
“I have always supported the European integration of the RSM, but in compliance with the principles of good neighborliness and, above all, the Copenhagen criteria for membership. And this would mean a change in the constitution and respect for the rights of the Macedonian Bulgarians. Refusal of the language of hatred, which was rampant in this election campaign, revision of textbooks, respect and protection of the Bulgarian cultural and historical heritage in this country”. Radev pointed out.
Acting Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev said for his part that “there is nowhere for us to make more concessions”.
Glavchev called to wait until it becomes clear what will be the composition of the new government in Skopje.
“I hope that they will also continue their European perspective. Our country, on its part, has nowhere to make concessions. Our position is pan-European, it is clear to our friends that if they do not comply with the requirements for EU membership – there is no way to succeed” , he said.
The next prime minister is expected to be the leader of VMRO-DPMNE Hristiyan Mitskoski. His party has mounted a powerful anti-Bulgarian campaign, but is expected to eventually support constitutional changes that should open his country’s door to the EU.
With them, the Bulgarians will also be included in the basic law, and this requirement is part of the negotiating framework of North Macedonia.
