British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wants to invest hundreds of millions in the nuclear industry in the coming years. The plans should create approximately 40,000 new jobs by 2030.

At least 200 million pounds (172 million euros) will be invested in Barrow-in-Furness, a town in the northwest of England where nuclear submarines are built. A further £353 million (€303 million) will be spent on new jobs and training in both the military and civilian nuclear sectors.

The British government will collaborate with defense companies BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Babcock and energy group EDF. According to Sunak, the investments are needed to “secure the future of our nuclear deterrent and nuclear power”.

The Labor opposition has already said it “fully supports” the plans. Barrow-in-Furness is playing a key role in building the next generation of nuclear-powered submarines, which are expected to be deployed around 2040 as part of the Aukus security pact with Australia and the United States.
