Book Day is celebrated in more than 100 countries around the world. The celebration was approved by UNESCO in 1995 with the objective of achieving equality in access to knowledge and protecting intellectual property.
The origins of the anniversary date back to 1926 when the Spanish Vicente Clavel Andrés proposed to take the date of birth of the writer Miguel de Cervantes as a milestone to celebrate the first Book Day. But then the date of birth of the writer of Don Quixote was questioned and the celebration was moved to April 23 in 1930, the date of death of Cervantes and Shakespeare.
