Bitcoin almost reached all-time highs on Tuesday. The largest and best-known cryptocurrency in the world easily broke the $68,000 mark during trading in Asia. At its peak of $68,828, the digital currency was trading just a fraction below the record high of $69,000 reached in November 2021.

The price of the cryptocurrency then fell to below $68,000 and was 0.8 percent lower at around 8:20 a.m. at around $67,050.

Bitcoin started the year around $43,000 and has since risen about 50 percent in value. The increase is driven by continued strong investor demand for US listed bitcoin funds, which were launched in January.

Converted into euros, the value of bitcoin, which is traded in dollars, has already reached a new record level. The total market value of bitcoin has also surpassed the peak of around $1.3 trillion that was reached in November 2021, at almost $1.4 trillion.
