(CNN) — It’s no secret that Bill Gates is passionate about artificial intelligence and now predicts that the technology will be transformative for everyone in the next five years.
The rise of artificial intelligence has raised fears that the technology will eliminate millions of jobs around the world. The International Monetary Fund reported this week that about 40% of jobs worldwide could be affected by the rise of artificial intelligence.
Gates doesn’t necessarily disagree with this idea, but he believes history shows that with every new technology comes fear and then new opportunities.
“Like what happened to us [con] agricultural productivity in 1900, people wondered, “Hey, what are people going to do?” In fact, many new things have been created, many new categories of work, and we are much better off than when everyone worked in the fields,” Gates said. “It will be so.”
In an interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria on Tuesday, Gates predicted that artificial intelligence will make everyone’s lives easier, specifically aiming to help doctors do their paperwork, which is “part of the work that a they don’t like it.” “We can make it very efficient.”
Since there’s no need for “a lot of new hardware,” Gates said, accessing the AI will be through “the phone or the PC that you already have connected via the Internet connection that you already have.”
He also said that improvements with OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4 have been “spectacular” because it can “essentially read and write,” so it’s “almost like having an employee tutoring you, giving you health advice, helping you write .” assist with support calls.” she said incorporating this technology into the educational or medical sectors will be “fantastic”.
Microsoft maintains a multi-million dollar partnership with OpenAI. Gates remains one of Microsoft’s largest shareholders.
“The goal of the Gates Foundation is to ensure that the gap between benefiting people in poor countries and reaching rich countries is very short,” Gates told Zakaria in Davos at the World Economic Forum. “After all, the shortage of doctors and teachers is much more serious in Africa than in the West.”
The IMF, in its report this week, had a much less optimistic view. The group said AI would worsen inequality if there were no intervention from politicians.
Donate your wealth
Gates is worth $140 billion, making him the fourth richest person on the planet, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. But he probably would still be the richest person in the world if he hadn’t pledged to donate all his money.
Gates told CNN he is not worried about losing his wealth.
“I have more than enough money for my consumption,” Gates said when Zakaria asked him how his philanthropic efforts were going. “I’m working hard to get down the list and I’ll be proud when I fall all the way down.”
The Microsoft co-founder and his ex-wife, Melinda French Gates, have pledged to donate much of their fortune to the foundation they created together 20 years ago, as well as other philanthropic endeavors.
In 2022, Gates announced the foundation’s intention to donate $9 billion annually through 2026. He said he was “excited that this will have such an impact” on the organizations it will donate to.
He said he and partners like Warren Buffett have donated about $100 billion to his foundation. Gates plans to give away all of his money at the rate of $9 billion a year in about 20 years.
