Between disability and work, a common ground littered with obstacles

“We are seen as a problem to be solved,” accused Denise Carniel, speaking to Pro Infirmis last November. Boring procedures, lack of information, poor job permanence: a real paradigm shift is needed, believes the journalist and parliamentarian during the first session of people with disabilities in Bern in March 2023.

First some data, because they are convincing. Of the 1.8 million people with disabilities in Switzerland (20% of the population), three in four are professionally active, an OfS report reveals in 2021. Strong commitment to the labor market, but the consequences are uncertain. Of this 73% of workers, four out of five feel strongly excluded from society, due to the areas of work and mobility. When asked about the chances of entering the primary job market, only one in two people say they are optimistic, according to a survey by Pro Infirmis published last September.
