The Belgian women’s rugby sevens team qualified for the semi-finals of the Challenger Series in Montevideo, Uruguayan, on Saturday. The BelSevens will face Argentina for a place in the final.
The Belgians won their three group matches, against Papoa New Guinea (37-5), Hong Kong (24-5) and Kenya (21-5). Emiel Vermote’s team then defeated Thailand in the quarter-finals 17-5.
This round in Uruguay is the second of three appointments in the Challenger Series. In January, the BelSevens finished fifth in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Competitions will follow later in Krakow, Poland (May 18-19).
After these three tournaments, the top four will participate in the final promotion/retention tournament in Madrid (May 31-June 2), where four tickets can be earned for the World Series. Four countries from that World Series are also participating (countries ranked between places 9 and 12).
Last year, the BelSevens narrowly missed out on promotion to the World Series.
