Regarding the failure of the Test series against Sri Lanka, Jalal said, ‘We played in Chittagong and Sylhet to give the batsmen a chance. So that they can run there. That didn’t happen, what I feel is that there are some cricketers who are new to Tests, they need to be given time. It is difficult to get into the Test team and adapt from the beginning. They will take some time. I am not naming names, there are two or three newcomers who will need time.’
Although talking about giving opportunities to youngsters, the head of the cricket management department has regrets about the experienced cricketers, ‘but those who were experienced cricketers did not run. I expected runs from them. If we got two good pairs from an experienced cricketer, we would have done well. But we didn’t get partnership from them. Here we have a big deficiency. I would say the bowling has been fairly good.’
Lack of preparation is evident behind not doing well in the test. Due to the busy schedule of the national team, most of the cricketers do not get a chance to play first-class matches. That opportunity is limited in the future. The white ball cricket is so busy throughout the year that the national team cricketers do not have the opportunity to play in the national league or BCL. Bangladesh has matches against Zimbabwe, South Africa, West Indies and India this year. There is also T20 World Cup.
Jalal admitted the reality and said, ‘What do you mean by preparation? There is no chance for preparation except the national league, because series after series. Which player do you see getting time to play more Tests? This opportunity does not exist. Series consists of Test, ODI, T20. As a national team player, you have to adapt and play. It would be good if you could play more Tests. But that opportunity does not happen. This time also we have this team program. Now it is quite difficult to find opportunities.’
Jalal added, ‘We want most of the players to play NCL, play BCL, then there is more competition. Earlier some players expressed reluctance. Now is not the time. The national team’s schedule is very tight. That’s why they don’t get a chance. It appears that the NCL is playing during the series. We have to see that most of the players, if they have the opportunity, take advantage of it.’
