ÖÄK and the Austrian Society for General and Family Medicine are extremely pleased with yesterday’s unanimous decision in the National Council.
Vienna (OTS) – After a long struggle, the National Council unanimously decided yesterday to introduce specialists in general medicine and family medicine. “This means that a long-standing demand from the Austrian Medical Association has now been implemented. This is a very pleasing step towards securing medical care for the future,” says ÖÄK President Johannes Steinhart.
“In 1992, at the Medical Association Conference in Schruns, we made the decision to become a specialist in general medicine – I am very pleased that after 32 years I can now support the implementation in an active position,” commented Edgar Wutscher, ÖÄK Vice President and Federal Curia Chairman of the resident doctors , the decision that has now been made in the National Council, which crowns the work of over three decades. “This long and hard fight, which Artur Wechselberger and I fought in the front line with immense commitment and passion, now finally means the long-awaited and deserved upgrade of general medicine. I am convinced that this step will ensure that more young doctors will find happiness in the wonderful field of general medicine and that medical care will also improve in the medium term,” says Wutscher.
Susanne Rabady, President of the Austrian Society for General and Family Medicine (ÖGAM), was also satisfied: “We are happy and relieved that general and family medicine has finally been recognized as a specific subject with special tasks, skills and opportunities. Now the gate to appropriate specialist training has been opened and the conditions have been created so that primary care primary care can continue to optimally fulfill its role as a supporting pillar in the health system in the future.”
