Hell Planet discovered. PHOTO/ MIRROR
This rocky planet, known as 55 Cancri e or “Janssen,” orbits its star very closely. As a result, a year on the planet lasts only 18 hours and its surface is covered in a deep lava ocean.
As reported by Mirror, it is estimated that the average daytime temperature will reach around 2,573 Kelvin – or 2,300 degrees Celsius.
This information was obtained thanks to a new instrument that captured very precise measurements of starlight from Janssen’s sun, known as Copernicus or 55 Cnc.
A new orbital analysis published in the journal Nature Astronomy reveals that the planet orbits Copernicus 70 times closer than Earth orbits the Sun.
While the planet is always hot, conditions may have turned hellish as it was pulled toward its star’s equator, due to the gravitational shift felt by Copernicus, a red dwarf, and Janssen’s sister planet.
Lead researcher Lily Zhao, an astrophysicist, said: “We have studied how this multi-planet system – one of the systems with the largest number of planets we have ever discovered – got to its current state.”
The researchers added that even in its original orbit, the planet “would likely be so hot that nothing could survive on its surface.”
Hell planet, 55 Cancri e has extreme temperatures and its surface is covered in a sea of lava, earning it the nickname “hell planet”.
