The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia issued a rather harsh statement addressed to France. Tbilisi reprimands Paris for its assessment of the events taking place in Georgia. As is known, the opposition and a number of non-governmental organizations are carrying out protests against the adoption of the law on “foreign agents”, during which there were clashes with Georgian law enforcement officers.

Georgia accused France and said that before drawing conclusions, Paris should follow the events more carefully. Official Tbilisi is in rather sharp rhetoric with a number of Western actors. In particular, it became known that Prime Minister Kobakhidze did not go to the USA, because Washington considered the waiver of the above-mentioned bill a condition of his visit. Tbilisi reacts harshly to the European Union as well. Does this mean a deeper conflict with the West could get bigger? Along with that harsh rhetoric, the government of Georgia declares that the country’s aspiration to join the European Union will be constant, but Georgia does not intend to give up its identity in any way in that way, and in this way the European Union will gain more value for Georgia.

What is really happening between Tbilisi and the West? This is essential for practically the entire region, and even more so in terms of relations with Armenia, particularly France. As I have mentioned many times, and what is quite obvious, the defense component of the Armenian-French relationship essentially depends on Georgia, because Georgia is the logistic route that should ensure the transport connection. Meanwhile, official Tbilisi blames Paris for an unobjective assessment. If the relationship between France and Georgia becomes strained, it will undoubtedly have an impact on the effectiveness of the Armenia-France defense cooperation.

It is very important for Armenia that France does not follow the so-called camp logic in the issue of Georgia, especially since it must be important for France itself. The conflict with the official Tbilisi will significantly affect the political vitality of France in the Caucasus, taking into account the impact on the Armenian-French relationship. Accordingly, we should hope that the Tbilisi-Paris tough rhetoric is situational, and in a strategic sense, the calculations and approaches are different and the big game will not be sacrificed for small problems, especially in the case of France.
