The deputies of the political commission of the Legislative Assembly continued with the study for the creation of the law on medical professions, an initiative presented by the doctors’ union seeking to legalize the Federation of Medical Professionals (Fedemed).

Said entity would have among its functions to legitimize the specialties of doctors and verify that they have the necessary certifications and guarantees of quality and ethics to practice.

With the aim of gathering more input and determining the feasibility of said proposal, the deputies received three authorities from the health sector, who provided their opinion on the advantages and disadvantages of this proposal.

One of the guests was the director of the Salvadoran Institute of Social Security (ISSS), Mónica Ayala, who recognized that the medical union must remain “updated” in order to adequately care for patients and thus settle a “debt” with professionals. Of medicine.

When Ayala took office at the head of the ISSS, one of the first actions he took was to reclassify health personnel to update the portfolio, but he found that many professions of psychologists, social workers, anesthetists, among others, “were grouped as healthcare workers.” health, that is, their classification by which they had studied was taken away.

During this process, the institution detected “cases of general practitioners who worked as pediatricians. So it was necessary to order these situations to avoid malpractice in patients,” mentioned the director of Social Security.

In that sense, he indicated that for the doctor to be certified, “his professional actions, research and clinical practice” must be taken into account.

The president of the Superior Council of Public Health, Elías Valle, joined the discussion of the topic, who considers that the initiative is “relevant” because it does not leave aside other professions necessary to provide comprehensive health services in the national network. of hospitals.

“There has always been a focus on dentistry and other areas, but nursing, veterinary medicine, psychology, among others, are left behind,” he noted.

The president of the Board of Surveillance of the Medical Profession (JVPM), Carlos Ramos, also contributed to the analysis of the issue.
