Two F-1 teams will completely change their names and adopt the name of a title sponsor next season, raising concerns that the championship’s huge growth in popularity is forcing teams to shed their identities to gain additional funding.
Alfa Romeo, which was the main sponsor of the Sauber team, will no longer appear among the F-1 teams next season. Since “Sauber” will become the official team of “Audi” in 2026, the collaboration with another car manufacturer was no longer logical. In December 2023 it became known that “Sauber” will start under the name “Stake F1 Team” in the coming seasons.
This name was given to the team because the online casino platform “Stake” became its main sponsor. On the other hand, the formula chassis is named after the streaming service “Kick”, so theoretically the full name of the team is “Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber”.
The new name of Red Bull’s sister team, “AlphaTauri”, will instead be “Visa Cash App RB Formula One Team”. The payment card company “Visa” has become the global partner of both teams owned by “Red Bull”, but within the framework of this cooperation the former “AlphaTauri” will completely change its name.
Without a lot of funding, it is impossible for F-1 teams to create competitive cars. Despite Max Verstappen’s dominance last season, there are currently ten teams in the F-1 championship whose formulas can be involved in the points race at various races. To stay in contention for the top positions, teams have to develop their formulas, which requires funding, so the money given by sponsors is very important. Adding an overall sponsor to an F-1 team’s name is nothing new, but in the case of Stake F1 Team and Visa Cash App RB, the identity of the team is no longer known.
