By unanimous vote of the Chamber of Deputies, April 7 was designated as the day of recognition of the national poet, Nobel Prize winner in Literature.
Valparaiso. 1/11/2024. Recognizing the enormous legacy of poetry, culture, education, diplomacy and the figure of Gabriela Mistral to our country is the objective of declaring every April 7 as National Gabriela Mistral Day. April 7 is the poet’s date of birth.
The initiative, originated in a motion and sent to the Senate, seeks to promote on April 7, all kinds of educational, dissemination, communication, cultural and artistic actions at the national level about the Chilean writer, Nobel Prize winner in Literature.
The work of the Culture Commission of the Lower House was reported by deputy Camila Rojas (Comunes), author of the proposal. “I would like to thank the unanimous approval of the project that establishes April 7 as Gabriela Mistral day. It is a tribute that we needed to have and what better way to legislate this possibility so that it has its day. Poet, educator, teacher, consul, diplomat, who continues to contribute to Chile with the legacy of her, our first Nobel Prize winner. I am very happy that we can continue to recognize her, I feel that the tributes are never enough,” said Representative Rojas.
Meanwhile, the also author of the project, representative Carolina Tello (PC), stated that “we are very happy from the Coquimbo Region, especially from Vicuña, where our teacher was born. A leader who fills us with pride. Today, January 10, is the date of her death, so it is a symbolic day. April 7 is a contribution to the knowledge of Gabriela Mistral.”
The Seremi for Women and Gender Equality, Fernanda Glasser, indicated that “we celebrate the approval of the bill that declares April 7 Gabriela Mistral day. It is a day to remember all the enormous contributions that the poet made to the culture and politics of our country. The rights of indigenous women, of girls and how she becomes a reference as a diplomat.”
It is expected to be approved in the Senate before April 7 of this year to have the first national day dedicated to Gabriela Mistral.
