That’s called a rude awakening from the title dream. Club Brugge has put KRC Genk firmly back on the ground: 4-0 against Jan Breydel. Our in-house analyst Stef Wijnants saw an unrecognizably weak Genk. “It shook and shuddered on all sides.”

“In five days, KRC Genk descended from heaven to hell. Jan Breydel had nothing left of the very best football we saw on Saturday against Anderlecht. The second half in particular was hideously bad. The two wingers Fadera and El Ouahdi were incredibly weak, the three central defenders were shooting, El Khannouss never got into his game and Hrosovsky looked like his much older brother on the field. In short: it shook and shuddered on all sides. On the other hand, it must also be said that Club Brugge was very strong. Their intensity was impressive. That was at the level that Genk showed against Anderlecht, but with even more quality on the ball. Then we are talking about a team that can soon aim for the highest.”

No disaster

“However, this defeat does not have to be a disaster for Genk. But then we have to win at home against Club Brugge on Sunday. Especially so that you don’t have to look down and can continue to go for that third place. The ambition expressed at the start of these play-offs – a European ticket and third place – is still perfectly achievable. But then they will soon have to turn to something else. I am still shocked by the enormous decline of this team in just a few days. Sunday will be all about revenge. Not so much for the result, but for the performance. Because in Bruges this Genk was short of hands and feet.”
