Former Brazilian footballer Dani Alves has been found guilty of rape. He was sentenced to four and a half years in prison by the Supreme Court of Catalonia. The victim was also ordered to pay one and a half million euros.
The Barcelona court said in a statement, ‘It is proven that the victim did not give consent to the sexual intercourse. Along with the plaintiff’s testimony, the allegations of rape made by him have been proved.
Alves was accused of raping a young woman in a nightclub in Barcelona. Alves told the court that what happened between them was completely consensual. The 40-year-old was arrested in January 2023 following allegations of rape. Since then he has been in jail. In between, the bail application was rejected due to the fear of absconding.
The trial of the latest case ended this month. But the Brazilian star changed the information for the fifth time before the trial began.
At first he claimed that he did not know the victim. Later said, he met her in the bathroom of the club and nothing happened. When confronted with biological evidence, he changed his view again. Still did not fully admit the physical relationship.
After receiving biological test results last April, Alves admitted for the first time that he had sex with the victim. He also said that he lied in the beginning thinking about his wife.
The victim told prosecutors she was dancing with Alves and voluntarily went to a bathroom. Later, however, he wanted to leave, but Alves did not allow him to do so. Then they slapped and raped her.
