Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi said on Tuesday that the Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital, Damascus, on Monday “will not go unanswered.”

The strike, which led to the killing of one of Iran’s most important men in the region, the commander of operations of the Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in Syria and Lebanon, Mohammad Reza Zahedi, and other leaders, is the most violent since the start of the escalation.

Iran faces accusations of escalating tension in the region, especially following the October 7 attack, which led to the intensification of the conflict between it and Israel on more than one front, especially in Syria and Lebanon.

However, the latest strike targeted one of its diplomatic headquarters in Damascus, which according to international norms was considered parallel to targeting the Iranian interior, amid questions about the nature of the Iranian response and its scenarios this time.

Iran has repeatedly threatened that it will respond to Israel’s attacks, but the nature of the response has always been limited to its agents in the region and not through it directly.

Iran’s ambassador to Damascus, Hussein Akbari, vowed that Tehran’s response to the targeting of the Iranian consulate would be “harsh,” stressing that Iran stands with the resistance, as he described it.

Akbari said: “Israel is carrying out inhuman actions to achieve its goals. We are on the side of the resistance and are not concerned about any action it takes. The international community bears its responsibilities towards stopping these attacks more than ever before.”
