The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) is launched, in cooperation with the Alexandria and National Libraries of the Kingdom of Morocco. The largest qualitative reading marathon in three Arab cities in Dhahran, Alexandria, and Rabat, for three days in the period from 19-21 Shaaban 1445 AH corresponding to (February 29-March 2, 2023). The Ithra Center is committed to planting a tree for every 100 pages read, as the marathon aims this year to reach 500,000 pages read to contribute to planting 5,000 trees. The marathon is being held this year for the first time with the participation of three Arab libraries, namely the Ithra Library in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the Library of Alexandria in Egypt, and the National Library of the Kingdom of Morocco. The three libraries will witness the presence of marathon participants to count the pages read at the end of the marathon. This marathon comes within a group of specific programs and initiatives organized by the Center throughout the year in an effort to make (Ithra) the global destination and the beating heart of culture and creative industry in the Kingdom, by contributing to empowering talents, supporting the production of Arabic content, and encouraging exchange between cultures, which enhances community and human development.

The idea of ​​the marathon revolves around urging everyone to read, as the “Ithra” Center, in cooperation with the National Center for Vegetation Development to Combat Desertification in Saudi Arabia and the relevant authorities in both Egypt and Morocco, is responsible for planting a tree for every 100 pages read from different fields of knowledge, with the aim of reaching 5,000 trees. . In addition, the reader will receive a medal as a motivational souvenir associated with the occasion, as these medals are divided into four categories: a brass medal for reading 100 pages, a bronze medal for reading 200 pages, a silver medal for reading 500 pages, and a gold medal for reading 1,000 pages.

It is noteworthy that the first edition of the marathon was held inside the Ithra Library, achieving 162,000 pages read and 1,622 trees planted. The second edition was held in the Ithra Library and two libraries in Riyadh and Tabuk, achieving 422,000 pages read and 4,222 trees planted, while the Ithra Center finished, in cooperation with the National Center. To develop vegetation cover and combat desertification, more than 5,000 seedlings were planted last October, which were the result of the number of pages read in the first and second editions. The planting was done in the National Park in Al-Ahsa with the participation of a number of readers participating in the marathon.
