Reuters said on Tuesday that a second royal photo released by Kensington Palace to the media had been edited in eight locations after an analysis by the agency’s photo editors.

The photo, which was published in April last year to celebrate the ninety-seventh birthday of the late Queen Elizabeth, showed her among a group of her grandchildren and their children.

Kensington Palace, the London office of Prince William and his wife Kate, said at the time that the 42-year-old princess had taken the photo at the Scottish royal residence at Balmoral Castle last summer.

Getty Images informed its customers earlier Tuesday that the photo taken at Balmoral had been “digitally modified at source for improvement,” without providing further details.

Although Getty, Reuters and other news organizations did not discover any problem with the image at the time, an examination by Reuters photo editors concluded that eight parts of the image were clearly modified using digital reproduction.

Reuters has not yet been able to determine the reason for making the amendments.

Digital reproduction involves copying pixels to either move or hide objects or parts of the image.

Kensington Palace in London declined to comment on the photo.

A Reuters spokesperson said: “Reuters is currently updating its vetting procedures for images from Kensington Palace after confirming that a second image has been edited. In line with the Thomson Reuters Trust Principles, Reuters is committed to ensuring that images meet its editorial standards of quality, accuracy and reliability.”

This month, Reuters and a number of other leading news organizations retracted another photo of Kate with her three children released by the palace on Mother’s Day after a post-publication analysis showed it did not meet their editorial standards.

The issue of altered photos comes amid widespread speculation on social media about Kate’s health since she underwent abdominal surgery in January.
