An enthusiastic speech by Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel to his players, before facing Lazio in the Champions League, had a magical effect, as the German team won 3-0 over its Italian rival, on Tuesday, to reach the quarter-finals.
But Tuchel paid the price with an injury to his toe.
The coach, who will leave Bayern at the end of the season after just over a year in charge, said that he kicked a box in the changing room during his enthusiastic speech in front of his players, who were in dire need of a win to revive their season.
The Bavarian giant had won only one match out of the last 5 matches it played in all competitions, before Tuesday’s match.
Tuchel said: “The motivational speech before the match cost me my right toe. I was treated immediately but I did not have the courage to take off the shoe because I did not think I would wear it again.”
Tuchel spent the match sitting on the bench, and his team won 3-1 on aggregate thanks to a brace by Bayern’s top scorer Harry Kane, and veteran Thomas Muller also scored.
Tuchel said: “I think the players wondered why I sat for 90 minutes.”
Bayern, which won the last 11 German League titles, is 10 points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen, and was also eliminated from the German Cup.
