On Friday, the administration of US President Joe Biden announces investments worth $5 billion aimed at supporting research and development in advanced computer chips.

The so-called National Semiconductor Technology Center will receive funding through the Chips and Science Act. The 2022 law aims to revitalize the computer chip sector within the United States through targeted government support.

“We need to build for the future and that means making investments in research and development,” Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo told reporters on a call to showcase the financial commitment.

The center will help finance the design and construction of a prototype of the new chips, in addition to training workers in this sector. The companies say they need a skilled workforce in order to take advantage of a separate $39 billion provided by the government to fund new and expanded computer chip factories. Data from the Ministry of Labor indicate that about 375,000 people work in the production of computer chips, with an average income of $82,830.

Industry leaders and interested parties plan to meet at the White House Friday for the announcement, according to government officials.
